The coin is dedicated to the Koli National Park, a national park in the municipalities of Joensuu, Lieksa and Kontiolahti in the North Karelia region of Finland. It covers 30 square kilometres of forested hills on the western shore of Lake Pielinen, and was established in 1991. Koli has lots to offer cultural heritage-wise. Formerly, it was a sacrificial site, but was later used for slash-and-burn agriculture. The purpose of Koli National Park isn't to preserve wild nature, but the traditional agricultural heritage.
The coin design is based on a picture of Juha-Pekka Järvenpää, showing a Finnish landscape as seen from the park. On the left the "FI" mintmark identifying Finland and on the right the symbol of the Finnish Mint. At the bottom the year of issue "2018"
The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
