The Academy of Athens, which was inaugurated on this day in 1885, is one of the buildings of the Athenian Trilogy, Hansen's architectural work that adorns Panepistimiou Street.
According to the Academy itself, it is "Hansen's most important work" and "in the opinion of experts, the most beautiful neoclassical building in the world."
The architect's source of inspiration was the classical architecture of 5th century Athens, as seen in the monuments of the Acropolis.
The sculptures of the pediment of the Hall and the two statues of Apollo and Athena, as well as most of the rich sculptural decoration, are works of the sculptor Leonidas Drosis.
A total of 740,000 coins were minted in rolls of 25 pieces.
