The coin is dedicated to the "World Day of the Bees" that is celebrated on May 20, commemorating the birth of Anton Jansa, an eighteenth-century Slovenian beekeeper considered a pioneer of modern beekeeping.

In 2015 Slovenia proposed to establish May 20 as the "World Day of the Bees". The objective of this initiative was to raise awareness about the importance of agriculture and the protection of biodiversity of a species threatened by high global mortality (a recent report by the United Nations showed that more than 40% of pollinator species, mainly bees and butterflies, in danger of extinction).

The coin's outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
