On 1 January 2007 Slovenia adopted the euro, becoming the first of the ten member states that joined the last enlargement of the EU in 2004. The national currency, the tolar, stopped circulating after 15 years of validity and Slovenians paid 239.64 tolars for one euro. 
In April 2016, the Bank of Slovenia held a public competition to design the commemorative 2-euro coin 2017 dedicated to the "10th Anniversary of the Euro in Slovenia". A total of 23 designs were finally selected, including the three finalist designs by Robert ŽvokeljMatjaž Učakar and the winner Matej Ramšak. Bank of Slovenia) dealt with the proposals and the process.The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
