The coin design, curated by Georgios Stamatopoulos, is inspired by the coin of the ancient Thracian city of Abdera, which depicts a griffin, a bird-like mythical creature.
The griffin was the emblem of the ancient city of Abdera, which, according to mythology, was founded by Heracles. In 545 BC, the inhabitants of the Ionian city of Teos settled in Abdera, minting coins that bore the head of Apollo on the obverse and the mythical griffin on the reverse.
